RPGaDay - Day 8 - Favorite Appearance of RPGs in the Media

Alright ... is "I don't care" an acceptable answer?

Otherwise ... I'm going to go way back and say the D&D game at the beginning of ET.

Wait ... no ... let's go with this:

Vin Diesel is one of Lady Blacksteel's celebrity crushes and while I had mentioned he was "one of us" some time back I don't think she believed me until I played this clip for her. Watching the expression on her face was priceless.

So that's my nomination ...

RPGaDay - Day 7 - Favorite Free RPG

Well I can tell you my favorite free RPG thing is Pathfinder Combat Manager as it makes it a whole lot easier to run a Pathfinder game. My thoughts on using it here.

As far as an actual game, well there are a few candidates:

Like Marvel?

This is great. The old Marvel Super Heroes Game is available for free now. If you've never tried it, it is worth a look.

Like Trek?

I think Where No Man Has Gone Before is a blast if you're into a Trek style game at all. My rundown of it is here.

Like Savage Worlds?

Savage Heroes is a site that's been around forever and has a bunch of fan conversions of other games, books, movies, and original settings as well. It's a great place to start looking for ideas when contemplating doing your own thing with the game.

RPGaDay 2015? Why not?

I see BA is doing it. I see Robb is doing it. Oh what the hell, this might add some structure to August's posts. But it's August 6th - how will I catch up? Through the miracle of back-dating! Expect these to come in bursts...

RPGaDay - Day 6 - Most Recent RPG Played

Errr ... well that would also be Pathfinder. I ran session 28 of Wrath of the Righteous just this past Saturday for 4 players with what ended up being 7 characters, as Apprentice Red rejoined us for one session. Wow ... I have only written up 6 of those? I have a lot of homework to do there. We shook off the cobwebs and should be back on track for next time later this month. I have no idea how long this AP will need up taking us to play through in real time but as long as everyone is having fun who cares?

RPGaDay - Day 5 - Most Recent RPG Purchase

Firing things back up after a break over part of the summer means checking out what's new with Pathfinder, so that meant picking up Unchained. I'll have a review down the road when I'm finished reading it but I'm about halfway through and so far I like it. There will be a lot of Pathfinder additions over the rest of the year as I do some catching up with some of the hard covers and the supporting books for the APs I intend to run.

A close runner-up (it arrived the next day)

This is a campaign book for Savage World that I have heard about for years but never picked up. Now I have and while I haven't yet read it (it's behind PF Unchained) Apprentice Blaster gave it a look and he is interested. It's a dark gothic future setting with some shades of 40K and Warzone and while I'm not sure how soon it will get played I wanted to add it to the Savage Worlds shelf regardless.

Other recent acquisitions include the monthly Pathfinder AP arrivals, Feng Shui 2, Age of Rebellion, and some PDFs for ICONS and M&M in the hopes that I will get to run or play some of them sometime soon.

RPGaDay - Day 4 - Most Surprising Game

Multiple answers here:

ICONS
Who would have thought that a lightweight supers RPG would a) be good and b) come from the guy behind Mutants and Masterminds?! There's an amazing balance of just enough substance to sketch out a character yet light enough mechanics to keep it fast and easy. It's a great game, especially with kids. I've written about it a lot over the last 5 years so here's a link to my posts. I thought for decades that a "decent" superhero game just inherently needed 300 pages of rules and this is the game that proved me wrong - to myself.

Pathfinder
I ran 3rd edition D&D with only short breaks for almost ten years. By the end I was burned out and tired of the system and never expected to run it for any length of time again. I spent roughly 3 years running 4th edition and then took a look at Pathfinder and felt the spark once again. A lot of it has to do with Paizo and the great job they do managing the whole thing. Their willingness to experiment with things is a lot of fun too from Iron Gods to Mythic to Unchained. Some has to do with the community of players and people who post up session summaries, reviews, and aids for the busy GM. A lot of it has to do with the solidity of a system that's been out in the public in some form for 15 years now. I don't know the exact ratios - all I know is that I am having fun running D&D type games again and have been for the last couple of years. Link to ridiculous number of posts about it here.

RPGaDay - Day 3 - Favorite New Game of the Last 12 Months

Easy:

This one is going to show up a lot in the "new" entries this month. Still haven't run it (sigh) but sometimes you can just tell. Check out the videos on the kickstarter site for an idea.

My other posts on it are here.

RPGaDay - Day 2 - Kickstarted Game Most Pleased You Backed

I've backed a few so I'm going to list a few

#1 - The Mutants and Masterminds 10th Anniversary Edition
It's a really nice edition with actual added useful content. Blog post here.

#2 - Spirit of 77
Interesting setting, interesting concept, interesting mechanics. Blog posts here.

#3 - Weird Wars Rome
Great addition to a great system. Blog post here.

I'm sure more will come along. I'm pretty comfortable with Kickstarter - you just have to look at what you're getting into.

RPGaDay - Day 1 - Forthcoming Game You're Most Looking Forward To

...and right up front I hit a bit of a wall. I started thinking and I don't really know of any new full games on the way that I am jonesd for.

  • D&D 5 is out and rolling
  • Pathfinder is rolling
  • Force and Destiny is pretty much out
  • The 40K series seems to be complete
  • M&M 3 is a great game with no urgent need for a revision
  • I haven't heard of anything new for Savage Worlds recently
So the easy target of a new edition of something I already like aren't even there. Even the next 18 months of Pathfinder AP's is not really striking home with me. Modiphius has some interesting licenses but their system does not appeal to me

The kickstarters I've backed have pretty much all wrapped up.

I'm really striking out here.

There's a Halo miniatures game in the works - that might be interesting.

Everquest III ? I mean I'm a little interested in that.

One of the City of Heroes successor projects?

Star Wars Battlefront III?

I had not really thought about it but there really isn't much I'm waiting for this year.

Final answer, for tabletop RPGs, is Freedom City 3rd Edition, which is technically a supplement for a game rather than a new game itself but it's the best I've got right now.

40K Friday - New Allies

We haven't been playing much 40K lately but work has continued:

  •  With the release of a new Dark Angels codex I have been reassessing my force in development to figure out how I need to adjust - more on that in another post.
  • The Eldar armies (Blaster's and mine) have been getting some attention.
  • I took my orks out for their first 7th edition scrap a while back - more on that later too.
The most recent development has been the acquisition of a small Dark Eldar force. The thinking was as follows:
  1. We have two Eldar armies in the house
  2. Eldar and Dark Eldar are battle-brothers
  3. Dark Eldar have a piece of wargear called a webway portal which allows the user and his unit to deep strike without deviation
  4. Wraithguard have short-ranged D-class weapons
Now we are not the first to discover this nifty combo but after playing around with various Deathwing and marine drop-pod armies I can say that safe deep-striking is a really really nice thing to have. With marines it's typically done with melta weapons or heavy flamers. Being able to do it with D-weapons is really nasty. It will only work with the one squad but it's a truly vicious squad. With a huskblade and a shadowfield he also gives the undead eldar some close combat punch that makes charging them a much less attractive proposition.

Now to enable this the minimum Dark Eldar force is an ally detachment, so 1 HQ and 1 troop unit.

Digging out my old never-built 3rd edition Dark Eldar warriors I put together a squad and eBay provided a reasonably priced Raider for them to ride in. This gives me a nice mobile unit that is not terribly expensive and dishes out some decent poisoned weapon fire which is something the normal Eldar army does not feature. With splinter racks on the raider, they will be scoring a lot of hits up close. Of course, with armor 10 on the raider they'd better take those shots while they can. They will most likely be starting in reserve.

Not much paint yet but they will get there

The total ally force looks like this:

1 Archon (HQ) @ 165 Pts
Infantry (Character); Fleet; Independent Character; Night Vision; Power from Pain; #Plasma Grenades; Haywire Grenades; Webway Portal; Shadow Field; Kabalite Armour; Splinter Pistol; Huskblade; Warlord

10 Kabalite Warriors (Troops) @ 165 Pts
Infantry; Fleet; Night Vision; Power from Pain; Kabalite Armour; Close Combat Weapon; Splinter Rifle (x9); Splinter Cannon

     1 Raider @ [70] Pts
          Splinter Racks; Disintegrator Cannon

Models in Army: 12
Total Army Cost: 330

Now granted, I could make this a lot cheaper. 5 Kabalite Warriors is 40 points, so I could strip this down to a 205 point boost, even less if I went with a less-geared-up Archon, but in a larger game of 1500+ points I like the capabilities this force brings to a typical Craftworld Eldar army.

For the future, I admit I like the Dark Eldar look, probably enough to expand them beyond "minimal ally force". If I can scrape together the rest of my old Warriors from the 3rd edition box that would give me a second squad (or two minimum squads) and at that point they have the core of a full army. From an ally standpoint, Fire Dragons on a Venom seem to be a popular option as do minimum warriors or Trueborn on Venoms for objective seizing, so a Venom or two seems like a good idea. A second Raider seems like an obvious choice, and a Ravager would add a Heavy Support option. Scourges and maybe some Incubi look like fun as well. There's not a lot of urgency here, just an interest and the potential to mix and match 3 different armies together in different ways.
