RPGaDay - Day 8 - Favorite Appearance of RPGs in the Media

Alright ... is "I don't care" an acceptable answer?

Otherwise ... I'm going to go way back and say the D&D game at the beginning of ET.

Wait ... no ... let's go with this:

Vin Diesel is one of Lady Blacksteel's celebrity crushes and while I had mentioned he was "one of us" some time back I don't think she believed me until I played this clip for her. Watching the expression on her face was priceless.

So that's my nomination ...

RPGaDay - Day 7 - Favorite Free RPG

Well I can tell you my favorite free RPG thing is Pathfinder Combat Manager as it makes it a whole lot easier to run a Pathfinder game. My thoughts on using it here.

As far as an actual game, well there are a few candidates:

Like Marvel?

This is great. The old Marvel Super Heroes Game is available for free now. If you've never tried it, it is worth a look.

Like Trek?

I think Where No Man Has Gone Before is a blast if you're into a Trek style game at all. My rundown of it is here.

Like Savage Worlds?

Savage Heroes is a site that's been around forever and has a bunch of fan conversions of other games, books, movies, and original settings as well. It's a great place to start looking for ideas when contemplating doing your own thing with the game.

RPGaDay 2015? Why not?

I see BA is doing it. I see Robb is doing it. Oh what the hell, this might add some structure to August's posts. But it's August 6th - how will I catch up? Through the miracle of back-dating! Expect these to come in bursts...

RPGaDay - Day 6 - Most Recent RPG Played

Errr ... well that would also be Pathfinder. I ran session 28 of Wrath of the Righteous just this past Saturday for 4 players with what ended up being 7 characters, as Apprentice Red rejoined us for one session. Wow ... I have only written up 6 of those? I have a lot of homework to do there. We shook off the cobwebs and should be back on track for next time later this month. I have no idea how long this AP will need up taking us to play through in real time but as long as everyone is having fun who cares?

RPGaDay - Day 5 - Most Recent RPG Purchase

Firing things back up after a break over part of the summer means checking out what's new with Pathfinder, so that meant picking up Unchained. I'll have a review down the road when I'm finished reading it but I'm about halfway through and so far I like it. There will be a lot of Pathfinder additions over the rest of the year as I do some catching up with some of the hard covers and the supporting books for the APs I intend to run.

A close runner-up (it arrived the next day)

This is a campaign book for Savage World that I have heard about for years but never picked up. Now I have and while I haven't yet read it (it's behind PF Unchained) Apprentice Blaster gave it a look and he is interested. It's a dark gothic future setting with some shades of 40K and Warzone and while I'm not sure how soon it will get played I wanted to add it to the Savage Worlds shelf regardless.

Other recent acquisitions include the monthly Pathfinder AP arrivals, Feng Shui 2, Age of Rebellion, and some PDFs for ICONS and M&M in the hopes that I will get to run or play some of them sometime soon.

RPGaDay - Day 4 - Most Surprising Game

Multiple answers here:

ICONS
Who would have thought that a lightweight supers RPG would a) be good and b) come from the guy behind Mutants and Masterminds?! There's an amazing balance of just enough substance to sketch out a character yet light enough mechanics to keep it fast and easy. It's a great game, especially with kids. I've written about it a lot over the last 5 years so here's a link to my posts. I thought for decades that a "decent" superhero game just inherently needed 300 pages of rules and this is the game that proved me wrong - to myself.

Pathfinder
I ran 3rd edition D&D with only short breaks for almost ten years. By the end I was burned out and tired of the system and never expected to run it for any length of time again. I spent roughly 3 years running 4th edition and then took a look at Pathfinder and felt the spark once again. A lot of it has to do with Paizo and the great job they do managing the whole thing. Their willingness to experiment with things is a lot of fun too from Iron Gods to Mythic to Unchained. Some has to do with the community of players and people who post up session summaries, reviews, and aids for the busy GM. A lot of it has to do with the solidity of a system that's been out in the public in some form for 15 years now. I don't know the exact ratios - all I know is that I am having fun running D&D type games again and have been for the last couple of years. Link to ridiculous number of posts about it here.

RPGaDay - Day 3 - Favorite New Game of the Last 12 Months

Easy:

This one is going to show up a lot in the "new" entries this month. Still haven't run it (sigh) but sometimes you can just tell. Check out the videos on the kickstarter site for an idea.

My other posts on it are here.

RPGaDay - Day 2 - Kickstarted Game Most Pleased You Backed

I've backed a few so I'm going to list a few

#1 - The Mutants and Masterminds 10th Anniversary Edition
It's a really nice edition with actual added useful content. Blog post here.

#2 - Spirit of 77
Interesting setting, interesting concept, interesting mechanics. Blog posts here.

#3 - Weird Wars Rome
Great addition to a great system. Blog post here.

I'm sure more will come along. I'm pretty comfortable with Kickstarter - you just have to look at what you're getting into.
